History
In 1633, George Calvert (1st Baron Baltimore) founded the colony of Maryland, after King Charles I granted them the charter. The colony was established for religious freedom and to sell land, and was named in honor of Queen Henrietta Maria, the king’s wife. Unfortunately, Calvert died before the charter could be executed, so it was granted to his son, Cecil Calvert (2nd Baron Baltimore). The first official settlement in Maryland was St. Mary’s City. Prior to the settling of the city, the land was owned by the Yaocomico Indians, so the land has to be purchased from them. Among the Yaocomico, there were also other Native American tribes. Some of them included the Potomac, the Piscataways, and the Susquehannock.
